Synopsis
As the virus spreads, the order begins to mutate. Straight from the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, horror master, writer-director Yeon Sang-ho’s (Train to Busan) latest horror COLONY, is a gore-filled zombie thriller that dives head deep into the anxiety of surveillance and the trauma of contagion. Biotech professor Se-jeong (Jun Ji-hyun) is attending a conference for intelligence and information exchange when she is thrust into a bloody nightmare when a disgruntled former employee, scientist Suh Young-cheol (Koo Kyo-hwan), unleashes a potent and rapidly mutating virus, leaving the infected learning collectively and evolving in minutes. In the multi-purpose building, home to a conference centre, restaurants and retail stores, a ragtag group of the uninfected band together and try to stave off the growing horde of zombies. On the outside, politicians and emergency personnel gather, questioning whether the infected should be treated as patients to be cured or monsters to be destroyed. Featuring standout performances from supporting cast, Ji Chang-Wook, Kim Sin-Rok and Shin Hyun-hee, COLONY is a fascinating exploration of the dangers of rapid communication, showcasing through the collective mind of the zombies that its ability to rapidly relay information is a tool of psychological threat rather than a safety net. Sang-ho brilliantly exposes the complexities of human nature, revealing how quickly one will become a predator when faced with becoming prey.
