Synopsis
From director Sébastien Marnier comes THE ORIGIN OF EVIL, a captivating crowd-favourite, nominated for the Audience Award at Venice Film Festival. Indulge in a cinematic experience that offers wealth, opulence and danger – the story of a toxic, dysfunctional family told from behind the doors of a dazzling seaside villa. When Stéphane (Laure Calamy, Antoinette in the Cévennes, AF FFF21) attempts to reconnect with her father, she could never have anticipated what would come next. Not wanting for much, she spends her days working in a fish cannery. Suddenly finding herself in the grasp of an exorbitantly wealthy family, she is taken aback by their unusual bond and extravagant lifestyle. Within the villa, Stéphane keeps the company of five equally perplexing women, a wife, a daughter, a businesswoman, a rebellious teenager and an incredibly unnerving servant – all of whom are supported by her mysterious and mostly scarce father. Feeling unsettled by the dynamics of the group and their suspicious benefactor, Stéphane begins to realise that beyond her general uneasiness, something truly disturbing is going on behind closed doors. Watch chaos erupt as deceit, lies and suspicion brew along the coastline... Described by Cineuropa as “one of the sparkiest actors out there,” Laure Calamy delivers a dynamic and enticing performance that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.
