La Scala’s gala season opening is always a glittering affair, and a highlight of the international arts calendar. This year the stars – Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Ludovic Tézier – align for Leo Muscato’s new production of Verdi’s grand tale of ill-fated love. Riccardo Chailly conducts a work that offers some of Verdi’s most memorable melodies, including its haunting overture, the rousing 'Rataplan' march and Leonora's soaring prayer, 'La vergine degli angeli'.
