Synopsis

Opera in three acts (1853) A blessing and a challenge for every major opera house, ‘La traviata’ holds a special place in La Scala’s history, marked by the legendary 1953 production conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini, directed by Luchino Visconti, and starring Maria Callas. That iconic interpretation seemed untouchable until 1990, when Riccardo Muti commissioned a new, lavish production from director Liliana Cavani, with sets and costumes by Academy Award-winners Dante Ferretti and Gabriella Pescucci respectively. This evocative and poetic staging returns in 2026 under Michele Gamba, with an unmissable cast: the charismatic Nadine Sierra as the courtesan Violetta, Piero Pretti as the idealistic Alfredo with whom she falls in love, and Boris Pinkhasovich as Giorgio Germont, whose intervention changes the course of their lives.

Screens as part of the 2026/27 Palace Opera & Ballet Cinema Season.
