Synopsis
Opera in three acts (1879) New Production! Ralph Fiennes’ acclaimed debut opera staging, filmed live during an eleven-performance, sold-out Paris run, now comes to cinemas. When shy Tatiana (Ruzan Mantashyan) first meets the aloof Eugene Onegin (Boris Pinkhasovich), she is instantly captivated. Overcoming her reserve, she writes him a heartfelt declaration of love, only to be rejected and subjected to a cold lecture. Years later, after a duel, Onegin finally realises he loves Tatiana, now the wife of Prince Gremin (Alexander Tsymbalyuk). Will she yield to his advances? Fascinated by Russian culture and attuned to the dramatic intensity of Tchaikovsky’s music, Fiennes’ elegant, restrained staging - paired with Semyon Bychkov's incisive musical direction - lets the characters’ emotions emerge in all their modern complexity.
