Something wicked this way comes in acclaimed film and stage director Phyllida Lloyd’s haunting 2002 production of Verdi’s magnificent opera. Inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy, it’s the composer at his most theatrical - bristling with demonic energy - and Lloyd depicts the murderous Macbeths’ (Anna Netrebko and Željko Lučić) childlessness as the dark sadness lurking behind their terrible deeds. The production uses Verdi’s 1865 Paris revision of the opera, which includes Lady M’s riveting aria ‘La luce langue’. This performance, captured live in 2018, is conducted by Royal Opera House Music Director Sir Antonio Pappano.
