Synopsis

In the heart of a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany stands a majestic ginkgo tree. Throughout a century of change, this silent witness has observed the quiet rhythms of transformation across three human lives. 2020: a neuroscientist from Hong Kong explores the mind of babies and begins an unexpected, mind-altering experiment with the ancient tree. 1972: a young student is profoundly changed by the simple act of observing and connecting with a geranium. 1908: through the lens of photography, the university’s first female student discovers sacred patterns of the universe hidden within the humblest of plants. As we follow the three protagonists’ attempts to connect — each one of them deeply rooted in their own present — they are transformed by the quiet, enduring, and mysterious power of nature.

Reviews

Silent Friend is a sublime experience, composed of incredibly beautiful imagery and thought-provoking ideas that will linger long after its two-and-a-half-hour runtime. Most films tell a story. Enyedi presents a new way of looking at the world.

Deep Focus Review

Silent Friend is a film not of environmentalist pleading but of ecological profundity. It gets under our skin by making us ponder the spirit beneath the bark.

Wall Street Journal

Enyedi is a master stylist who knows how to create a certain mood, mixing visual poetry with deadpan humor, and big ideas with quotidian foibles, in a film that explores our mysterious relationship with both the green world and one another.

The Hollywood Reporter

Enyedi gripping drama, beautifully and inventively shot by cinematographer Gergely Pálos, tells audiences how important it is to slow down, connect and comprehend, especially when another party does not seem to be readily communicable.
