Synopsis

Demi Moore delivers the performance of her career according to critics in Coralie Fargeat’s audacious Cannes Film Festival Best Screenplay award-winning body horror, THE SUBSTANCE. Moore's co-star Margaret Qualley is also ferociously formidable coming off of two similarly outlandish and bold roles in Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar-winning ‘Poor Things’ and his twisted follow-up ‘Kinds Of Kindness’. Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore), renowned for an aerobics show, faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday when she is unceremoniously fired. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a black-market substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself (Qualley). A frenzied and satirical body horror that's as clever as it is gory, THE SUBSTANCE adds a timely and viscerally confronting feminist spin on ageism and the toll of vanity.

Reviews

"Fargeat does grotesque deliciously, and in every way."

- London Evening Standard

"If Moore’s extraordinary, best-of-career performance doesn’t kick off a full Demi-aissance, there is no God -- this riff on The Picture of Dorian Gray goes ballistic in the best possible way."

- Rolling Stone

"Fargeat delivers a macabre, funny, tragic, absurd and grotesque Grand Guignol of butts and guts; a bonkers and brutal “beauty horror” that elevates the genre to a hysterically unprecedented heights."

- Tribune News Service
