Synopsis
Based on the bestseller by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson and directed by Iceland’s multi-award-winning director Baltasar Kormákur, TOUCH is a deeply moving, delicate and spellbinding romance that spans several decades and continents. Widower Kristofer (Egill Ólafsson) sets off from Iceland on a seemingly impossible mission. Decades earlier, the young Kristofer (Pálmi Kormákur) meets his first love, Miko (Kōki), in London. A student of economics, he decides – as part-commitment to the working class, part-whim, part-dare – to give up his studies and work in a Japanese restaurant. And it’s there he meets Miko, the owner’s daughter, and romance blossoms. Then she disappears without trace. All these decades later, with limited time left, Kristofer ends up in COVID-affected London and tries to track her down, eventually leading him to Japan and an astonishing discovery. The number 1 film of the 2024 Scandinavian Film Festival, TOUCH is a sensitively observed, magnificently crafted globe-spanning tale about the complexities of love and the unbreakable bonds that can tether two people through the ages.
Reviews
"Its sensibility is as exquisitely tender as the flutter of a butterfly wing."
- RogerEbert.com
"“Touch” rekindles a treacly genre that I didn’t realize I missed. Its tender performances and gut-punch reveals are classic tear-jerker ingredients."
- New York Times
"Touch is a minor-key movie but a consistently absorbing one. It’s rewarding to see accomplished director Kormákur working in a different vein."
- Hollywood Reporter
"A search for a lost love makes for a heartrending romantic affair to remember."
- Variety
"It’s rare that a movie based on a book makes me want to actually read the book, but between Kormákur and Olafsson’s creativity, I’m tempted to make “Touch” my summer reading."
- Arizona Republic
